Man fatally shot in apartment, in the Wich of the East

by Andrew A. Anissi

On Sunday, May 22, 2005 at about 6 p.m., Christopher Manley, a 33-year-old man former con, was shot dead, execution style in the back of the head in the doorway of his apartment in Manhattan's Wich of the East. FYI: The Wich of the East is the area of Green Wich Village between 14th Street and Houston, and east of 4th Avenue.

Manley was shot after an argument in front of his door, after which two, unidentified men were seen running east on 10th Street, the police said. Put two and two together, one would assume that the two running men were the the killers. But you never know.

Back in `88, Manley went to prison for 15 months for stealing something or another. He was last arrested on May 6 in Manhattan after the po po's caught him with drugs.

Unsurprisingly in the Wich, Manley had only lived in the apartment for a few months, and wasn't on the lease.

Manley's neighbor, Guy Stuttman, 41, who has lived in the building for 18 years, said he had found Manley to be friendly when the two met in the elevator, and that Mr. Manley had had many visitors. "Manley was...well, he's the Man." Stuttman should have said. What he actually, in reference to Manley's visitors, was, "They all had bikes. In and out - a lot of it," he said. "They were all friendly." Apparently, they weren't ALL friendly.
