A Knock at the Door...

Acclaimed by the New York Times, New York Post, and the New York Daily News, "A Knock at the Door..." is a multi-venue exhibition that puts the audience in the position of the authorities. When is artistic expression un-American? When is it art? And when is it dangerous?

Rochester sees some things a little (OK, a lot) differently

Lauri Githens Hatch
Staff writer

(May 1, 2005) — This started out as a straightforward piece: Walk around town, talk to the locals, have them rhapsodize about what they love here, write it up, print it.

But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum you're holding. No one said what we thought they might.

Sure, they got whimsical about our four distinct seasons, our luscious food, our sightseeing, our rich history. But their answers were — like the people here — just a little different. Unusual. Hilarious. Weird. Cool.

And in the end, this list was a great metaphor for Rochester:

Sure, some of the time it's predictably cold.

But virtually all year 'round, life here is unpredictably cool — cool in the same way that Levis 501s, black coffee and '57 Chevys are, and always will be, cool.

1. Natives, fascinatingly, say this city's name like no one else: "Raaachst'r." If you want to blend in, send that first syllable right through the nose 'til you sound like Felix Unger clearing his sinuses. If someone makes that vowel sound even remotely like an "O," they're from elsewhere and think they're just passing through but eventually wind up staying. And saying "Raaachst'r."

2. Want to fit in even faster? Refer to the small private school or the college as "Nyyyyaaah-za-rith."

The Garlic Catastrophe of 2005

by Andrew A. Anissi

It seems like such a great idea, when moving out, to take bottles of spices, so large that they could, conceivably, last a lifetime in the pantry without depleting, but when one arrives home and opens the suitcase to find one's clothes and other items covered in garlic from a bottle that sprang open as a result of a) a bumpy plane ride, b) an esoteric, ghostly force, or c) a wicked baggage inspector at the airport, one laments. One, of course, refers to me, after my return from Sarasota last night, when I looked in horror upon the yellow dust of garlic sprinkled evenly on each of my shirts and pants, and gathered in irremovable piles at the bottom of my suitcases.

It seemed like such a great idea to dump as much garlic as I could into my trash can, and throw my clothes into the laundry, until, like the sidewalk of a beach town, my bedroom has a layer of yellow dust detectable first by bare feet, and second by the not entirely displeasing, but highly inappropriate garlic odor which would, no doubt, drive away even the strongest of vampires.

The Garlic Catastrophe of 2005 occured on September 25. It will take time, and a good deal of perspiration, but the restoration of my bedroom to non-kitchen odors will be achieved.

Shame on This Administration. It's Time For Bush To Act.

By Rep. CYNTHIA McKINNEY (Georgia)

The message today is that while we are watching this tragedy unfold, we must not sitting idly by.

The Office of the Fourth Congressional District has adopted Baton Rouge Mosque #65 which is housing 100 New Orleans residents. They need dry goods, food, and hygiene kits. Anyone interested in helping us help these 100 people, please bring donations to our Congressional office as soon as possible.

As we open our hearts, pocketbooks, and homes to Katrina's victims, it is now imperative that the Government do its part.

Kanye West Speaks His Mind About Bush and New Orleans on Live TV

I love live TV when people speaking to the camera depart from their scripted commentary and tell us what they're really thinking. Kanye West did just that when he ripped apart President Bush's response to the New Orleans disaster.

See the Washington Post article here.

Unintelligent design of school curriculum

Would it be appropriate for schools to resume teaching the "flat Earth" theory of the world, and let students choose for themselves between that and the heretical "oblate spheroid" theory that schools seem to prefer?

Dog Days: There's no place like ancient Rome—except for sweltering modern-day New York City

This is a very interesting essay from the Village Voice comparing what ancient writers wrote about living in Rome back in the day, to what residents of New York City experience on a daily basis.
